Like many professional communicators, news is where I started. My journalism curriculum consisted early on of news classes, like Grammar for Journalists and Newswriting, and my first writing samples were news-style articles for Her Campus.
I don’t see news as just a place to start, though. Even in my more recent roles on the public relations side of communications, I have engaged with the news media through media monitoring, preparing press releases and submitting letters to the editor.
In my personal life, I am an avid newsie, with Google Alerts, a subscription to theSkimm and CNNGo on my Safari favorites list.
Experience & Work Samples
Life Section Editor, Her Campus September 2013 – Present
National Contributing Writer, Her Campus December 2012 – August 2013
Her Campus is the #1 online community for women in college, with a monthly readership of more than 2 million people. In 2013, Her Campus was named one of the best 100 websites for women by Forbes. After writing for Her Campus for 9 months, I was promoted to Life editor — and I could not be happier in my current role! As an editor, I edit stories for the Life section of the site, assist writers with research and fact-checking, and pitch stories for all sections of the site.
As an editor, my main responsibility is to oversee the writing of others, but I still get to write my own stories from time to time. As a national contributing writer, I wrote stories for all sections of the site on a huge variety of topics, including career tips, love advice, and health information. Now, I focus on writing more in-depth, investigative pieces, like “The Truth About Racism in Southern Sororities.”
Three of my articles have been syndicated to other leading news outlets for college students. In June 2013, USA Today picked up my article titled “Your Step-By-Step Guide to Landing a Killer Recommendation Letter.” That same month, The Huffington Post ran my article titled, “Taking a Gap Year Before College: 3 Success Stories.” In July 2013, The Huffington Post syndicated my article titled “10 Colleges With the Best Perks.” Both articles were published on Her Campus’s website, as well as the college section of the USA Today and Huff Post websites, respectively. A complete selection of my articles can be found at www.hercampus.com/author/alex-gladu.
